چکیده

Three techniques called non-negative matrix factorization (NMF), local non-negative matrix factorization (LNMF), and discriminant non-negative matrix factorization (DNMF), have been recently developed for decomposing a data matrix into non-negative factors named basis images and decomposition coefficients. Although these techniques are closely related to each other since they impose certain common non-negative constraints, the decomposition process of each algorithm involves a different objective function. While NMF approximates in the best possible way the data matrix by the product of its decomposition factors imposing only nonnegative constraints, LNMF adds more constraints on the basis images to reduce the redundant information between them and to enlarge their sparseness degree. DNMF imposes more constraints on the coefficients in order to take into account class information. In this paper these methods are used in the context of face recognition to extract features from two image databases (YALE and ORL). Extracted features are further classified by two metric-based classifiers, namely Maximum Correlation Classifier (MCC) and Cosine Similarity Measure (CSM). Besides, Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are also used for classification. Experiments show that when these algorithms are applied along with the aforementioned classifiers, to face recognition task they lead to quite different results, their performance being data dependent.

Improving LNMF Performance of Facial Expression Recognition via Significant Parts Extraction using Shapley Value

Nonnegative Matrix Factorization (NMF) algorithms have been utilized in a wide range of real applications. NMF is done by several researchers to its part based representation property especially in the facial expression recognition problem. It decomposes a face image into its essential parts (e.g. nose, lips, etc.) but in all previous attempts, it is neglected that all features achieved by NMF ...

A comparative study of facial appearance modeling methods for active appearance models

Active appearance models (AAMs) have been widely used in many face modeling and facial feature extraction methods. One of the problems of AAMs is that it is difficult to model a sufficiently wide range of human facial appearances, the pattern of intensities across a face image patch. Previous researches have used principal component analysis (PCA) for facial appearance modeling, but there has b...

Iterative Weighted Non-smooth Non-negative Matrix Factorization for Face Recognition

Non-negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) is a part-based image representation method. It comes from the intuitive idea that entire face image can be constructed by combining several parts. In this paper, we propose a framework for face recognition by finding localized, part-based representations, denoted “Iterative weighted non-smooth non-negative matrix factorization” (IWNS-NMF). A new cost fun...

Localized versus Locality-Preserving Subspace Projections for Face Recognition

Three different localized representation methods and a manifold learning approach to face recognition are compared in terms of recognition accuracy. The techniques under investigation are (a) local nonnegative matrix factorization (LNMF); (b) independent component analysis (ICA); (c) NMF with sparse constraints (NMFsc); (d) locality-preserving projections (Laplacian faces). A systematic compara...
